Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the Hearing Threshold of Limits(HTLs) among the ROKAF pilots and to analyse the associations between the HTLs and the contributing factors.

Methods : The sample was composed of 427 pilots taking the physical examination in Aerospace Medical Center. A structured questionnaire and physical examination data were used and collected date were processed using SPSS 18.0 win.

Results : The pilots experience greater Hearing loss with increasing severities from Lower Frequencies(0.5,1,2kHz) to Higher Frequencies(3,4,6kHz). HTLs of left ear is higher than right ear. Age and past history were the risk factors in both ears. Additional risk factors were tinnitus for the left ear Lower Frequencies and blood sugar fasting for the Higher Frequencies.

Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the Pilots need to take a special care to prevent the hearing loss. Above all, as Aerospace Medical Center is the "Hub" for flight crew, it needs to develop the health promotion programs related to hearing loss for pilots.
